jiujitsu

   (joo-JIT-soo) Japanese, from Chinese: soft technique] A system of hand-to-hand combat that developed in the 1500s, involving methods of kicking, hitting, throwing, etc., calculated to turn an opponent’s weight and strength against him. judo, karate, and aikido are based partly on principles of jujitsu.
